From the Bolton Evening News, first published Saturday 8th Jun 1996.
FOOTBALLING memorabilia belonging to one of the prominent figures in the game has been donated to the people of Bolton.
The family of the late Ken Dagnall have handed over his prized possessions to the town following his death, aged 74, in March last year. Now archivists are trawling through a treasure trove of soccer history to catalogue it ready for public viewing.
Mr Dagnall was in line to referee the 1966 world cup final until England won a place and had to content himself with the third place play off between Russia and Portugal.
His carefully preserved collection includes official match reports detailing decisions from some of the 32 internationals he refereed. Presentations such as tie pins and pennants, official letters, travel tickets and postcards document a career which saw the rent collector and fireman rise through the ranks to become one of the most respected figures in the game.
Bolton library staff have not finished examining the three boxes of small items but are hoping it will all be catalogued and ready to be put in the archives in a few months time.
Mr Dagnall, who lived in Glenside Drive, Great Lever, died in Bolton General Hospital after being ill for some time.
Converted for the new archive on 14 July 2000. Some images and formatting may have been lost in the conversion.
